Her parents are still married, but remain separated because of Amerie's father's job and his wizard ancestry. Amerie was born in New York and lived with her mother until she was 9 when she was sent to visit her father in England. Amerie learns from her grandmother about her wizard ancestry. She goes back to America and asks her mother. Her mother claims that she didn't know about that. When she turns eleven she moves back to England despite her mother's wishes.
